HISTORY OF THE MOTORMEN
Daventry United (formerly Ford Sports Daventry) are probably one of the youngest clubs in the Eagle Bitter United Counties Football League having been formed in 1968. We started life in the Central Northants Combination where we enjoyed success with both first and second teams, and in those early days we had to hire council pitches. Then in 1972 we moved to our present home here at the Royal Oak.
In 1977 we joined the United Counties League and with there only being three divisions back then we gained promotion to Division One in 1979. After winning Division One twice and then bringing the ground up to the required standard we eventually gained promotion to the Premier Division in 1996. In the last few years we have achieved a lot more than we could have dreamed of.
We had our best run in the FA Cup in the 98/99 season when under the leadership of Richard Green and Kevin Flear we eventually went out to high-flying Conference League side Sutton United in a replay after holding them to a draw at the Royal Oak.
HONOURS
1999 UCL K/O CUP WINNERS
1999-2000 PREMIER DIVISION CHAMPIONS
1999-2000 BENEVOLENT CUP WINNERS
2001-2002 PREMIER DIVISION CHAMPIONS
2001-2002 DAVENTRY CHARITY CUP WINNERS
2004-2005 RESERVE DIVISIONS
In the 1999/2000 season we became Premier Division champions and Benevolent Cup winners under Darren Wood, in 00/01 we lost most of our first team squad and Shane Geary built a squad from scratch to eventually finish in fourth place.
2001/02 season saw us win the Premier Division again but this time by a record 19 point margin, and we also added the Daventry Charity Cup.
Off the pitch we collected awards too as the club won the Fair Play and Hospitality awards. We have been awarded the Hospitality Award for the Eagle Bitter United Counties Football League for the past four seasons, voted for by visiting teams and match officials.
Awards have continued to roll in off the pitch with the club being awarded Hospitality awards every year since, but on the pitch has not been as good with finishing 11th, 9th, and 6th and last season a lowly 19th.
In between, Darran Foster led his reserve side to the Reserve Division Two title after a 23 year wait for the club in the 2004/05 season.
Who knows what’s in store for the 2006/07 season? Most of the first team squad has left, and new Manager Darran Foster has to rebuild from scratch.
As a club we are asking you to help us to climb back up to the top of the tree by sponsoring Daventry United Football Club. Please contact Nigel Foster if you think that you can help us achieve this.
